Gaining and retaining employment

We partner with leading industry training providers in Retail, Hospitality and Trade to give young people supportive pathways to gaining and retaining employment. This is an integral part to our Work Experience Program (WEX) which provides young people work-based learning, internships, apprenticeships and meaningful work experiences.

Job Preparation – career planning, resume development, interview practice, pathways to free or subsidised hospitality training, including RSA and Barista training or new job starters. Current available courses include:

Employment Skills Short Course (18 October 2017 – 29 November 2017)

This fast paced course is designed for job seekers who want to learn new skills to use immediately. Training that is fun and motivating. You will learn:

Coffee Making & Café Service
Communication & Interpersonal Skills
Working Effectively in Business & Team Work
Job seeking strategies
Resume, cover Letters & Interview Skills

Barista Training (16 October 2017 – 30 October 2017)

This short course runs for 3 days only, you will learn:

How to make the Perfect Expresso
Grinder and Espresso Machine Care
Customer Service Skills
Workplace Experience – partnering with business and industry to provide work-based learning, internships and meaningful work experience. In 2018, we will be launching the Phoenix House Youth Services Work Experience Program (WEX), which includes:

Phoenix House Retail Program – In partnership with the Australian Retail Association (ARA), the Phoenix House Retail Program provides an entry level employment pathway for young people into the retail industry.

The combination of knowledge based training and practical work placement provides the opportunity for jobseekers to learn the skills on the job that are required to get employed. Work placements are offered with ARA’s network of many national retailers.

Young people can utilise skills through retail that are transferable to other industries in the future, including hospitality, business and tourism.
Apprenticeship & Training Pathways – In partnership with the NSW Department of Industry (TAFE), Phoenix House Youth Services support young people with pathways to training. Current courses include:

Certificate III in Commercial Cookery

This qualification reflects the role of commercial cooks who use a wide range of well-developed cookery skills and sound knowledge of kitchen operations to prepare food and menu items. This qualification provides a pathway to work as a commercial cook in organisations such as restaurants, hotels, clubs, pubs, cafes and coffee shops.
Certificate III in Hospitality (Front of House)

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who have a range of well-developed hospitality service, sales or operational skills and sound knowledge of industry operations. The qualification provides a pathway to work in organisations such as restaurants, hotels, clubs, cafes and coffee shops.

During the course, students will have the opportunity to work with some independence under limited supervision using plans, policies and procedures in the Northern Beaches Campus Pittwater Training Restaurant.
