Work Ready & Career Development for Youth

For the last couple of weeks Phoenix House has been excelling in one of its leading programs “Work Ready”

We have had a number of events and activities that were aimed to help Young People to understand their career aspirations, goals, find their pathway and learn work ready skills.

One of Phoenix House’s partner Norths League club has recently hosted and facilitated the interview skills workshop for our TRANSIT students. According to a team of experienced HR team of the Norths, building young people’s confidence and job readiness skills is an important element of the work ready preparation.

The Phoenix House students were exposed to a group interview scenarios and given advice on the do’s and don’ts of interviewing with the HR team at Norths. They were also given the opportunity to sit with the HR managers one on one where they were “interviewed” and given advice on their resumes. It really helps support the work the students are completing as a part of the Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways.

Moreover, Phoenix House is striving to organize regular Career Information Forum by inviting a number of industry leaders to share their knowledge, experience and opportunities with the Young People: “We are giving young people an opportunity to grow professionally and prepare the base for their career starts”. The Forum was held at the Phoenix House on 20th November. A number of industry speakers included representatives from Australian Retail Association from Sydney and Melbourne offices, Business Chamber of Commerce and Apprenticeships Are Us. The Young People got a chance to ask questions regarding the industries of their interests as well as apply for job opportunities right on spot.

Phoenix House is grateful to its sponsors that make these special opportunities available for the Young People. For example, Thread Together provided the young people with formal clothing that they can wear for future interviews and employment.

Not only the clients of Phoenix House feel that our Youth Services are making positive impact on lives of youth living in Northern Sydney but also their parents.

Our youth workers keep receiving positive feedback thanking the Phoenix House staff for the work they do: “I met my daughter after her job interview today and she was glowing all dressed in the items she got when you took her to Dressed for Success. She is confident and happy it went well. Thank you! Today she reinforced how serious she is in her pathway. Again I truly appreciate how much you have helped and positively impacted on my daughter. I don’t know what I can do but sincerely thank you and tell people how positive you and Phoenix House have been to my family.”

Phoenix House is a community based organization with a 30-year track record in creating new opportunities for young people who are marginalized, at risk or disengaged. Through our alternative education programs and support services, young people can reach their full potential in a safe and nurturing environment.
