Laing O’Rourke raises funds for Phoenix

Laing O’Rourke reaches an altitude of 2,700m to help raise funds for Phoenix!

Despite Phoenix’ website states that there’s no need to climb a mountain to help us raise funds, one very special organization Laing O’Rourke reached an altitude of 2,700 metres in Northern India, Dharmshala. We are very grateful for their generous support in raising invaluable funds for our education, counselling and wellbeing programs. We met with Daniel (Senior Project Engineer) as to learn more about their amazing fundraising expedition.

Phoenix House: Where did the Trekking take place?

Daniel: Located in Northern India, Dharamshala is a hill station which commands the majestic views of the mighty Dhauladhar ranges and Kangra Valley. It is also the official residence of the Dalai Lama but we weren’t fortunate enough to bump into him! With the snowy mountain ranges, Dharamshala hosts a mesmerizing backdrop.

PH: How long did the expedition last and how many kms did you cover?

D: The challenge was to ascend by foot over 53 kilometres, over 3 days at a peak altitude of 2,700m.

PH: How many people took part in it?

D: We joined a team of 100 but we were a team of four.

PH: Which was the most challenging part?

D: It was particularly important for us in this challenge, to remember that we were all in it together and were completing the challenge as team. Our team of 4 supported one another with our varying abilities to ensure we were able to complete the Challenge safely and enjoyably, it would have been very easy to go off on our own and leave the less fit team members behind.

Other challenges eating curry 3 times a day for a week and staying in basic accommodation!

PH: Why did you choose to fundraise for Phoenix?

D: To mark the end of our journey in Hong Kong, the team felt it was important to find a cause to participate in that upholds the LOR EPIC values. We reviewed several different charities but thought Phoenix house was the one for us as it worked with young people and gave them the opportunity to turn their lives around.
